Acanthurus guttatus: the spotted surgeonfish, an excellent grazer for reef aquariums

The Acanthurus guttatus, better known as the spotted surgeonfish, is a marine species highly valued for its ecological role in reef aquariums. Native to the tropical waters of the Pacific, this fish is distinguished by its silvery body adorned with multiple white spots and its fins highlighted with dark reflections, giving it a unique and elegant appearance.

The spotted surgeonfish is known for being an excellent grazer of filamentous algae. It actively contributes to the natural maintenance of the aquarium by consuming algae that could otherwise overrun live rocks and disrupt the tank's ecosystem.

An active behavior and a need for space

The Acanthurus guttatus is a very active fish that enjoys long swimming distances. To ensure its well-being, it is essential to provide it with a large-volume aquarium with ample open space. The presence of rocks for grazing and a sandy area for exploring also helps enrich its natural behavior.

This fish is generally peaceful but can become territorial with other surgeonfish, especially in a restricted space. A well-structured decor helps reduce potential tensions among the occupants.

A varied diet for a robust fish

Although primarily herbivorous, the Acanthurus guttatus requires a varied diet to stay in top shape. Its diet should include:

• Regular supplies of fresh or dried algae (nori, spirulina).
• Artemia, krill, and finely chopped mussels for protein supplementation.
• Specially enriched marine pellets and flakes for herbivorous fish.

This dietary diversity not only helps keep its metabolism active but also strengthens its immune system and preserves the brilliance of its characteristic spotted appearance.

A useful and ornamental fish

Besides being a valuable ally against unwanted algae, the spotted surgeonfish adds a dynamic and elegant touch to the aquarium with its fast swimming and discreet yet refined colors.

For aquarists looking to introduce a robust, active fish beneficial to the tank's balance, the Acanthurus guttatus is an ideal choice, provided it is given a spacious environment and a diet tailored to its specific needs.
